Some people have school spirit.
Shelby Black has real ones.
Shelby Black has spent the past six months training to be an exorcist. Her great-uncle Roy―a Catholic priest―has put her through exorcist boot camp hell, hoping to develop her talent, but ohmygod, he still doesn’t trust her to do an exorcism on her own.
High school is hard enough without having to explain that you fight demons for a living, so Shelby keeps her extracurricular activity to herself. The last thing she wants is for her crush, Spencer, to find out what she does in her off time.
But Shelby knows how to keep a secret―even a big one. Like the fact that her mom left under mysterious circumstances and it’s all her fault. Shelby is hellbent on finding her mom, no matter what it costs her―even if what it ends up costing her is her soul AND a relationship with Spencer.
Jennifer Honeybourn works in corporate communications in Vancouver, British Columbia. She’s a fan of British accents, Broadway musicals, and epic, happily-ever-after love stories. If she could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, she’d have high tea with Walt Disney, JK Rowling, and her nana. She lives with her husband, daughter and cat in a house filled with books. Wesley James Ruined My Life is her first novel.
Review & Wrap-Up:
I would like to thank Xpresso Book Tours, NetGalley and Jennifer Honeybourn for the opportunity to read When Life Gives You Demons. I was given an advance reader copy of this book for my honest opinion. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Shelby Black is a sixteen year-old girl, living with her 73-year-old great-uncle, Father Roy, learning how to become an exorcist. Everything about this scenario, and the photo on the cover, screamed to me that it was going to be a fun read, and it was. Who wouldn't want to read a book about a teenage girl learning to do exorcisms?
When Life Gives You Demons is a cute, fast, easy read that will have you smiling and rooting for the good guy. Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans will enjoy this demon hunter tale, as much as anyone who enjoys - a fun version of - The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
My biggest complaint about this book was that I felt like since the book was supposed to be about a teenage exorcist, there wasn't a lot of exorcising on her behalf. Granted, she was a normal teenager and did not really put forth the effort and practice that is needed to make yourself truly good at something, and once she finally puts herself into it 100% in order to find her mother, this skill does develop some. But it didn't help any that Uncle Roy didn't allow her to really mess up to see what not practicing could really do.
Overall, I was happy with this cute tween/early teen book. Something fun with a slightly serious side. If you're looking for a book that is fun and uplifting, with a tickle of a teenage romance, then this is a good pick!
From one bookaholic to another, I hope I’ve helped you find your next fix.
