Publication date: August 14th 2018
Genres: Adult, Mystery, Thriller

Synopsis:

They murdered her sister. They threatened her church. But their day of reckoning will cost her everything…

When Cici Gurule finds the dead body of a parishioner in the nearby Santa Fe National Forest, she’s horrified to realize the victim bears the same stab wounds that ended her twin sister’s life one year earlier.

Now, as a freewheeling, progressive reverend who’ll stop at nothing to protect her flock, she’ll need to join forces with her detective friend and loyal pair of Great Pyrenees to hunt down the killer before she’s forced to officiate another funeral.

Soon, however, Cici discovers her sister was on the trail of a deep-rooted criminal operation, and her death was no random act of violence. With the criminals out for Cici’s blood, she needs to catch the wolf by the tail…before it goes in for the kill.

Fans of Gillian Flynn, Paula Hawkins, and Stacy Claflin will love Alexa’s Padgett’s new edge-of-your-seat novel!

Excerpt:

Sam once again faced the street, apparently unable to meet her eyes.

“As you and I already guessed and the Office of Medical Investigation confirmed about an hour ago, the same type of knife was used to strike Donald. A switch blade. In the same location as Anna Carmen—the kidney. We’ve seen one other death like that in the past few years. Also unsolved.”

He paused, waiting for Cici to digest this information. Cici dipped her head, eyes wide and fixed on Sam’s face.

“And if we infer that Donald’s killer is the same as Anna Carmen’s, which we’ll definitely pursue, then we need to go back and look at the drug trafficking ring at Santa Fe College to determine if there’s a link there between the killer and Anna Carmen. Because we know Anna Carmen knew Donald through your father. The net’s tightening on this whole investigation.”

Cici’s chair scraped a harsh shriek as she shoved back from the table. Sam didn’t turn back toward her, probably because he knew what was coming next.

“Screw you, Sam.”

He didn’t even flinch as she snarled the words.

“And screw your shitty investigation that would try to link my sister to some drug ring.”

He didn’t move as she picked up her gloves and stormed from the café.

Review & Wrap-Up:

I have to admit, I thought that having a reverend be my guide through a drug infested murder mystery was a little strange, but I rather enjoyed Alexa Padgett’s A Pilgrimage to Death. While the main character, Cici, is a reverend, the story is not preachy. Cici is a young woman who has made mistakes of her own and is there fore those who are making their own. And that includes her decease twin sister.

Over a couple hundred pages, Cici and Sam, her childhood friend turned detective, sort through clues, follow-up leads, and work toward finding the person who murdered her sister, all while almost losing her own life on a couple different accounts.

A Pilgrimage to Death is a sad and thrilling tale, filled with grief, drugs and a killer you’ll never see coming. But wait, this isn’t the end to Cici’s story!

A Heritage of Death (Reverend Cici Gurule Mysteries #2) comes out on October 23rd! I’m excited to see where Cici’s story takes her next! If you are too, make sure to reserve your copy today!

From one bookaholic to another, I hope I’ve helped you find your next fix.

Pair it with: The Riddler Red Blend

This wine is a blend of Petit Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Tempranillo Charbono, Zinfandel and Petite Verdot. Kind of wacky but the name is the Riddler. This wine has a lot of blackberry and blueberry fruit, black licorice spice and a peppery note to the nose. Very fruit forward and drinkable style with and exotic spice to the finish, very puzzling. Pair with roasted lamb with basil pesto or grilled beef and caramelized onion. And of course, make sure to pair with A Pilgrimage to Death by Alexa Padgett!
